HOUSTON... The traditional
British pub is steeped in history and custom, going back many centuries. The
center for socializing in any neighborhood, for many Brits, their "local" is a
place to keep apprised of current affairs and to interact with neighbors.
Houston's newest pub is
The Red
Lion, located at 2316
South Shepherd just north of Fairview.
The Red
Lion fulfills every
requirement of the traditional British pub with its warm, wood-paneled
interiors, inviting fireplace, brass accents and red leather-tufted
upholstery. Just as in most British pubs, the Red Lion will have a special
area for darts, and, in fair weather, additional seating and service on the
front patio.
Owner Craig Mallinson, a native
of England, grew up with a love of neighborhood pubs. "Even when I was a kid
and allowed into pubs, I remember being fascinated with the atmosphere, the
congeniality and even their smell when 1 stood outside a doorway," he states.
Mallinson hopes that with his
new establishment, Houstonians will understand his passion for pubs and come
to enjoy the Red Lion like Brits do their neighborhood "local." In addition to
an extensive variety of all the popular English ales and imported beers - more
than 20 on-tap - the pub will offer all descriptions of premium liquors,
single malts and an extensive wine list.
And beyond the libations,
The Red
Lion also offers an
impressive bill of fare that includes traditional British pub favorites as
well as popular American-style dishes. "I want to offer food from both sides
of my background," says Mallinson. "I love all the time-honored pub favorites
from England, but, after my many years in Houston, 1 love the popular foods
here as well."
The food at
The Red Lion is prepared
with fresh, high quality ingredients - there is no freezer on the premises.
Menu items include mandatory pub dishes such as Shepherds Pie, prepared with
fresh carrots, peas, seasoned ground meat and topped with mashed potatoes and
cheese; and Bangers & Mash, sizzling sausages covered in a sweet onion gravy
with mashed potatoes. In addition, customers will enjoy popular Houston fare
such as quesadillas, burgers and sandwiches.
A variety of starters are
offered that are perfect accompaniments to a pint of Boddington's. The
appetizers include Mini Burgers, four diminutive burgers served with ketchup,
pickles and fries; the Onion Bahji Basket, spicy curry fritters made with
shaved sweet onions and served with house-made, sweet chutney; and a British
favorite straight from the English countryside, Sausage Rolls, house made
served with HP sauce, Baked Brie is another favourite at the Pub. Best Brie
served over fresh Salad and finished with a light drizzle of Apricot Sauce.
Specialties include the full
English Fry-up Breakfast, on Saturday and Sunday only, made up of eggs, Irish
back bacon, house made sausage, and Heinz baked beans; daily specials such as
Filet Mignon and sides served for just $15.00 on Thursdays. Mondays is Burger
Night at the Lion, all 1/2lb Angus Certified Burgers are just $5.00!!
(excludes Bacon Burger and Stilton Burger). Roast Lamb Dinner and Roast Beef &
Yorkshire Pudding on Sunday. Other offerings include a cheese plate made up of
a variety of imported cheeses and of course the now-famous Fish and Chips!
